Rail-to-Road First & Last Mile Coordination

RAILCAR TRANSPORT SERVICES

Rail moves massive freight economically over long distances — but the critical connection between the railyard and your facility is where most operations break down. Kingsway Specialized manages the entire first and last mile: coordinating railcar pickups, bulk offloading, truck-rail transloading, and final delivery with FRA, DOT, and TWIC-compliant crews — so your railcar freight never sits idle costing you demurrage.

The Service
Rail-to-Road: The Critical Connection
Rail transport is one of the most fuel-efficient and cost-effective methods for moving bulk freight over long distances — a single railcar can carry the equivalent of four to five trucks worth of freight. But the logistics at each end of the rail journey are where most companies struggle. Railcars arriving at a yard need to be spotted, offloaded, and dispatched by truck before demurrage charges begin accumulating. Kingsway Specialized is the bridge between rail and road. We don't operate trains — we manage the critical first and last mile that connects railyard operations to your facility. From coordinating car placement to bulk liquid offloading to truck/rail transloading with flatbeds, step decks, and tankers — our team keeps your railcar freight moving continuously from track to destination.
The Kingsway Rail-to-Road Advantage
Rail companies get your freight to the yard. Your facility needs it at the dock. The gap between those two points is exactly what Kingsway manages. We pre-stage trucks at the yard before your railcar arrives, coordinate offload with rail yard crews, handle bulk transloading on-site, and dispatch loaded trucks directly to your destination — with real-time communication between our rail yard team and truck dispatch at every step. No idle cars. No demurrage surprises. No coordination breakdowns at the handoff.

Our Capabilities
What We Handle
First & Last Mile Truck Coordination
We dispatch trucks to Class I and short-line rail yards for pickup, and deliver directly to your facility — bridging the gap between railhead and destination every time.
Bulk Liquid & Dry Bulk Offloading
Tank car offloading into tanker trucks, and hopper/gondola car unloading into flatbeds, dump trailers, or bulk pneumatic equipment — coordinated with yard crews and safety oversight.
Truck/Rail Transloading
Cargo transferred from railcar to truck — flatbeds, step decks, and tankers — at rail-adjacent transload facilities or industrial sidings with our equipment and operators on-site.
Demurrage Management & Car Tracking
We track inbound car ETAs, monitor free time windows, and pre-stage trucks to prevent demurrage charges from accumulating on spotted railcars waiting for pickup.
Industrial Siding & Plant Coordination
For facilities with on-site rail spurs, we coordinate car spotting, switching, and truck connection — integrating rail operations with your plant logistics seamlessly.
Scheduled & On-Demand Railcar Moves
Ongoing scheduled programs for regular rail shipments, or on-demand mobilization for spot and project rail moves — with the same quality of service on either model.
▶  How Railcar Coordination Works at Kingsway
01
Car Details & ETA Tracking
We receive your railcar numbers, commodity details, and rail junction information. Our team tracks car ETAs through the rail network and monitors free time windows to plan pickup before demurrage begins.
02
Pre-Stage Truck Assets at the Yard
Before the railcar is spotted, our trucks are dispatched to the rail yard — flatbeds, tankers, or step decks depending on the commodity. Equipment is on-site and ready when the car arrives.
03
Offload & Transload Operations
Rail yard crews spot the car, our team manages the offload or transload operation — bulk liquid pumping, dry bulk transfer, or direct flatcar-to-truck loading — with safety compliance at every step.
04
Final-Mile Truck Delivery
Loaded trucks depart the rail yard for your facility with GPS tracking active. For oversized railcar cargo moving to the final destination, permits and escorts are coordinated in advance.
05
Delivery Confirmation & Car Release
Delivery confirmed at your facility and documented. Empty railcar release coordinated with the railroad — completing the full cycle with zero idle time and no lingering demurrage exposure.
Why Kingsway
The Kingsway Rail Advantage
  • Experienced Rail Yard Operations & Logistics Team
Our team understands rail yard protocols, car spotting procedures, and the operational rhythms of Class I and short-line facilities — so we work with the railroad, not against it.
  • Real-Time Communication Between Rail & Truck Dispatch
Our rail yard team and truck dispatch communicate in real time throughout every move. Car delays, schedule changes, and load complications are addressed immediately — never discovered after the fact.
  • FRA, DOT & TWIC Compliance for Safe Handling
All rail-side operations follow FRA safety regulations, DOT transport compliance, and TWIC card requirements for port-adjacent rail facilities — protecting your cargo, your people, and your liability.
  • Flexible Equipment: Flatbeds, Tankers, Step Decks
No single equipment type fits every railcar cargo. We match the right truck to the right commodity — tankers for liquid bulk, flatbeds for heavy equipment, step decks for dimensional freight.
  • Demurrage Prevention Through Proactive Scheduling
Demurrage on railcars can run $75–$200 per car per day and compounds fast. Our proactive ETA monitoring and pre-staged truck assets eliminate the idle time that generates those charges.
